Lock 58

Mile 143.9 - Look carefully at the wall of this lock.  Rather smooth isn't it?  There's no stones, it's covered with concrete!  This is the first of thirteen locks so constructed.  The walls of the canal were originally covered with lumber because of the shortage of finishing stones in the area.  The wood needed a lot of maintenance and was eventually replaced with concrete.
